It's a wrap! Month four of the 52 Books In 2016 Reading Challenge is under our belts. We hit the ground running this month to scratch off more books from our TBR list. We ended April with a total of 49 books read for the month. We read roughly 1.5 books a day. Last month I choose to read the kids one short picture book each night. In addition to the picture book I also read them a bit of their chosen chapter book for the week.
The thing I'm loving most about this 52 Books In 2016 Reading Challenge is that not only have the kids love for reading grown, but Moo's interest in reading chapter books has grown. She's also reading well above her grade level in school. It's been amazing to witness her growth and to watch her develop a deep appreciation for certain authors and characters. It takes me back to when I fell in love with my favorite authors and characters reading series like Harry Potter, The Women's Murder Club, Alex Cross, Twilight and most recently the Crossfire series.
Right now JJ is still obsessed with any books that have to deal with Thomas the Tank Engine or trains period, but I can't wait until he starts expanding his horizons. Hamster Princess: Harriet the Invincible by Ursula Vernon
If you haven't already figured it out from title, Harriet is a hamster and she had of the burden of being born a princess. This book is very much like the hamster version of Sleeping Beauty, but with a few twists. For starters Harriet doesn't want to be a princess. She's not a girly girl. Instead of practicing her ball room dancing, she'd rather be out slaying dragons and other monsters. I have to admit that I picked this book up for Moo at first because she loves all things princess, but I quickly fell in love with this book and have already started on book 2.
Stuck In The Mud by Shana Corey
No shocker here that JJ's favorite book was one based on his favorite Thomas & Friends movie, Hero of the Rails. Thomas saves the day again when he helps Hiro avoid going to the Scrap Yard despite sneaky Spencer's attempts to have Hiro scraped. Thomas & Friends lovers are sure to love this quick and easy read.
Bad Kitty School Daze by Nick Bruel
Also not a shocker is Moo's pick of Bad Kitty School Daze as her favorite read. She's obsessed with the Bad Kitty series. I think we've officially read all but one. She wants to create her own book series now. Thanks Nick Bruel for inspiring my daughter and helping her to love reading even more!
Anyways, Kitty and Puppy are off to obedience school to learn how to be better siblings to each other. Think of Kitty as the bossy, spoiled older sister who's used to being the only child. Then along comes Puppy, the annoyingly always happy, playful and sometimes mischievous little brother. Will obedience school break them or will they break obedience school? Either way your little reader (and you) will be in for a good read and some good laughs!

Hamster Princess: Of Mice and Magic by Ursula Vernon
Harriet the hamster princess is back again. This time she has to break the curse of the twelve dancing mice princesses or risk losing her family's fortune and legacy forever. We've already started this book and it's just as good as the first one. I hope there will be more books added to this series.

Death at a Fixer Upper by Sarah T. Hobart
Sam Turner is real estate agent who can't seem to keep a client because they always end up turning up dead. I'm this book as part of my Random House Mystery Chat Pack. While I do enjoy romances, mysteries are my first love when it comes to books. It's been great being part of the #RHMysteryPack crew. This book sounds like it's a fun read. Besides Sam's clients turning up dead, her ex comes back into the picture and there's a romance. So it looks like I haven't completely left the romance genre behind, but it is nice getting exposed to some other mysteries writers besides my faves.
We're up to a total of 203 books read for the year! Originally, our goal was to read 150 books as a family. We met that goal last month and I upped our goal to 300-500 books for the year. I don't think we'll have any issues with hitting 300 books and will probably surpass 500 before the year is out.
This is such an adorable reading challenge! I absolutely love it and will try to incorporate this with my children this summer. My daughter reads her own little chapter books, but my son still enjoys when we read together. My daughter does too -- she just enjoys doing the reading while I listen to her. LOL!
