Mission
The mission of the National Autistic Society (NAS) is "to change the world for people living with autism through education, campaigning, support and pioneering services."
Why You Should Support Them
Did you know that there are different forms of Autism? These forms are often referred to as Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD) or more commonly as Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Each individual is affected differently depending on the form of Autism he/she has. However, Autism most commonly affects individuals by causing difficulty with socializing, being able to communicate, causing repetitive behavior as well as a variety of physical issues like seizures. At this time there is no cure for Autism and no concrete explanation as to what causes this illness.
Started in 1962, NAS works to help those in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland that have been diagnosed with or affected by Autism. They provide helplines as well as online support to caregivers and parents to assist with researching the disease. Nas also currently operates 6 schools for persons who are Autistic to attend and get a specialized education designed to suit their learning needs. Other services offered include job placement and support, Autistic support groups, residential and supported living services, training and much more. How You Can Help
There are numerous ways that you can assist the National Autistic Society with helping those affected by Autism. You can become a NAS member. They offer a host of different membership packages to include not only UK residents, but residents from the US and other countries wishing to help.

ReplyDeleteGreat post! My son is being tested in April, but we know he is "on the spectrum". He's been in ST, OT, and DT for about a year now. Only other mothers of children dealing with this really truly understand how difficult the day to day can be! Thanks for putting that info out for people!!! Really so important to get involved!!
